Canada 2008

I have to do a little catch up here. We've had a busy summer so far. We started out with our big trip to Canada. This years trip was for a family reunion in Raymond, Alberta. It's always fun to see all the distant cousins.

This trip was a little harder than others since we were missing one of our family members. Sarah was not able to come with us. She has entered the world of the working and had to stay home. That was a little scary to leave her home alone. Thank goodness for good neighbors who looked out for her. We really missed her and I think she had a little taste of missing us too. (It didn't last long once we came home.)

The sites in Canada were the same. We stayed in Lethbridge, visited Raymond, went to Cardston and Waterton Lake. We did see some new things. We went to a bird refuge, took a drive to Medicine Hat (Grandma wanted to go there, there was nothing to do, the kids were complaining the whole time, so we drove there - 1 hour- and drove back.) But I think the highlight of the trip was the visit to Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump.

Ok, maybe a little explanation.... Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump is an old Indian site where they would chase the buffalo off a cliff so they would kill many at one time. The story goes that there was a little boy who wanted to be part of the buffalo men and be involved in the chase. Some of the men would make a alleyway hiding behind shrubs while other men would dress up as wolfs or whatever. They would chase the buffalo, hearding them off the cliff. Well the boy couldn't be part of the hearders, so he decided to go to the bottom of the cliff to watch the buffalo fall. Unfortunately they fell on top of him and he died. Thus the name Head Smashed In. We went to this museum when Sarah was 3 and she had nightmares for several years after that about the buffalo. It's too bad she was not there this year to face her fears.
